The Cisco Packet Voice Digital Signal Processor Modules (PVDMs) The Cisco Packet Voice Digital Signal Processor Modules (PVDMs) are essential components for Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISRs) to provide advanced voice capabilities. These modules enable high-density voice connectivity, conferencing, transcoding, media optimization, transrating, and secure voice for Cisco Unified Communications solutions. With the PVDMs, users can experience unprecedented scale and a smaller solution footprint than ever before. Support for Digital Voice Connections, Conferencing, and Media Optimization The PVDMs support a wide range of digital voice applications, including T1/E1 voice, conferencing, universal transcoding, and transrating. These modules packetize digital voice into IP packets, enabling time-division multiplexing (TDM) digital voice applications. They also support ad hoc and meet-me conferencing with various codecs, as well as universal transcoding, which allows conversion from any supported codec to any other supported codec. Additionally, the PVDMs perform compression, voice-activity detection, jitter management, and echo cancellation for optimal voice quality. Energy-Saving Features The PVDMs offer multiple power-saving modes, including a power-saver mode when the module is not in use. In power-saver mode, each PVDM can save up to 5 watts of power. This feature helps reduce energy consumption and lowers operating costs. Analog and Digital Voice Modules The PVDMs are compatible with analog voice modules (FXS, FXO, and E/M) and Basic Rate Interface (BRI) digital voice modules for the 4000 Series ISRs. These modules contain built-in, nonconfigurable digital signal processors (DSPs) and do not require any additional PVDMs for voice packetization.
