Beer Description: This cherry flavoured beer is brewed by Oud Beersel, which has been in operation since 1882. The brewery is located in Beersel (hence the name), just 10km from Brussels. It is special because it’s one of the last authentic lambic breweries in Belgium.
What is lambic? Well, it’s a type of beer that matures up to three years in barrels. To make Oude Kriek Oud Beersel, sour cherries are added to the lambic beer and then it goes through two fermentations. Oude Kriek Oud Beersel is ruby red in colour and is unique in the fact that it contains approximately 400g of cherries per litre. The beer has no added sugar, artificial flavourings or preservatives. It has an ABV content of 6.5% and smells and tastes of cherries and almonds.
This beer has won a few beer awards over the past few years – it won the trophy for the “Best Belgian Style Ale” at the Australian International Beer Awards 2011. It was also awarded a bronze medal at the World Beer Awards 2017 for the category of “World’s Best Kriek”. Oude Kriek Oud Beersel also won a gold award at the Brussels Beer Challenge 2018 for the category of Old Style Fruit-Lambic and in 2022, it was awarded a silver medal at the World Beer Cup for the category of Belgian Fruit Beer.
